Lost in Beijing
Getting on the plane to China was one of the best/scariest moments of my life. It was Chinese New Years and I was 1 out of 4 people on a 747 that wasn’t Chinese. I remember thinking “what the hell am I getting myself into?” Beijing was NOT an easy city to navigate. NOBODY speaks English, it was freezing cold, and it was close to midnight when I walked up out of the subway in the middle of Tiananmen Square with nothing but a map fully written in Chinese. It was AWESOME, no really I mean it.
There is an intangible value which comes from totally immersing yourself in a new place.
People often ask me where’s my favorite place I’ve been and that’s one of the toughest questions to answer because it’s hard not to fall a little in love with every place I go, but because of the cultural submergence alone China is definitely one of my favorites. I highly encourage everyone to travel to not just China, but their version of what China was to me.
Now, what are you waiting for? Get going!
